Starting as a small retail herb shop in 1975 in Sacramento, California, Starwest Botanicals had very high appreciation by the local consumers. However, when they decided to sell their premium seasonings wholesale, they faced the competition in the face of the larger spice companies that had already been established as leaders in the branch. So to find their place in the market, Starwest Botanicals began to sell the highest quality of herbs at more affordable prices. Van Joerger, the founder and president of the company, decided to hit the road with his sample bag, so he can personally demonstrate to shop buyers that Starwest really could offer much more regarding product pureness and good prices, and most people understood that this was a better chance for their own business as well.

In 1979, the brand opened their first herb mill to have better control over their activity. Just a year later, they began importing premium quality herbs and spices from different countries, and supplying wholesalers and manufacturers. Sometime the same year, Starwest began supporting their organic herb industry as well. The company’s responsible and ethical methods of work, led them to success and in 1983, they were named to Inc. magazines list of top 500 fastest-growing private companies.

Nowadays, Starwest Botanicals is one of the biggest organic herb suppliers in the USA with more than 150,000 sq. ft. of production space and modern warehouse, as well as more than one million pounds of fine herbs and condiments in stock.
